(MALAGA, WEST SPAIN)

Bruno Dell’Angelo, Bernard Landau and Robert Marquet

This paper reports the presence of Chitons (Mollusca, Polyplacophora) in the Pliocene of Estepona (Malaga, West Spain). More than 400 plates has been studied from five localities: Velerin, Velerin Antena, Velerin Carretera, Parque Antena and Rio del Padron. This is the first documentation of fossil chitons from the Neogene of Spain. Eighteen species of chitons have been identified, two of them described as new: Lepidopleurus cajetanus, Lepidopleurus (Leptochiton) algesirensis, Lepidopleurus (Leptochiton) tavianii sp.nov., Lepidopleurus (Parachiton) aff. africanus, Hanleya hanleyi, Hanleya sp., Ischnochiton ulivii, Ischnochiton martinelli sp.nov., Ischnochiton rissoi, Ischnochiton (Stenosemus) aff. vanbellei, Callochiton septemvalvis, Lepidochitona cinerea, Lepidochitona canariensis, Chiton miocenicus, Chiton corallinus, Acanthochitona fascicularis, Acanthochitona crinita, Craspedochiton altavillensis. 12 species are still living in Mediterranean while only 9 occur off the Atlantic coasts of Europe. The two new species and Hanleya sp. are known from Pliocene deposits only, while Ischnochiton ulivii and Craspedochiton altavillensis do not exceed Pleistocene.
